It consists of three sets of two strings (or courses) either tuned in unison or in octaves. While most tres guitars are smaller than an average guitar, some tres guitars are converted from regular guitars without much difficulty. Smaller tres guitars tend to be tuned to an open D chord (A,D & F#) while others may be tuned to a C chord (G,C &E).
